Personnel Profile
The Republic's Emergency Medical Hologram is based on the image of Doctor Katherine Pulaski of Starfleet Medical as part of the Mark XXIII Emergency Medical Hologram model year produced by Starfleet's medical holographic division, becoming active on stardate 58455.6. While the actual Doctor Pulaski had difficulty agreeing to having her image used for something as complex as an EMH – often despising the idea of mixing medicine with artificial intelligence – it was quelled with the new standard procedure for EMH training that requires each newly-minted program to undergo a full year internship at the Starfleet Academy hospital before being uploaded to a starship.
When the real Doctor Pulaski finally met the class of seventeen new programs, her treatment of the holographic automatons was so ill-received – with her signature stubbornness and cantankerousness on full display – it had the effect of each holographic doctor promising one another to not to follow in her footsteps, agreeing to develop a better bedside manner. Regardless of this, fragments of the Pulaski's true personality still bleeds through on occasion, and while amusing in its own right, the Mark XXIII EMH model year is still considered a technological marvel, mixing the attributes of a well-known medical technophobe with cutting-edge holographic technology.
As for herself, the Republic's EMH has been granted full departmental authority to operate as an independent member of the ship's crew, with the computer programmed to provide only the Chief Medical Officer and the captain the authority to discontinue her program without the EMH's permission. Additionally, in an effort allow her program to grow in manner similar to the Voyager EMH, she was directed to keep her program active twenty-four hours a day. This was to allow her to interact with as much of the crew as possible, and permit her to further expand her behavior database of organic beings through her daily interactions, thus allowing her to augment her own program beyond medical functions into as many vocations and professional pursuits as she desired. The intention was to eventually apply to Starfleet for her Declaration of Sentience, or DOS; a coveted accolade among all self-aware holograms in Starfleet.
